The Nipigon Elks Peewee & Bantam Girls hosted a successful tournament on March 2nd, 3rd & 4th. Three Peewee teams and five Bantam teams took part. Mother Nature's storm caused havoc with the schedule on Friday but organizers did a great job keeping the tourney running smoothly.

With a superb offensive and defensive effort along with solid goaltending the Bantam girls were undefeated in round robin play which landed them in the championship game against the very competitive Sport Top Wings from Thunder Bay. Nipigon claimed first place after an impressive final against the Wings with a 5-1 win.

The team had an awesome year participating in tournaments in Thunder Bay, Dryden and Minnesota. The Bantam girls will finish off their season with a trip to the Provincial Championships held in Mississauga on April 13, 14, & 15.

In Peewee Championship action, fans were treated to the most exciting game of the tournament when it took overtime and a Shoot-out before the Thunder Bay Pizza Hut Panthers stole the Gold from the hometown girls with a 2-1 victory. Potting the lone goal for Nipigon was Katelyne Lesperance.

In double round robin play, Nipigon lost by identical 1-0 scores in two hard fought contests with Pizza Hut on Friday but made it to the finals when rookie goalie Emily Mannila posted back to back shutouts over Marathon. Goals from Veronica Pellerin and Dayle Chouinard sealed a 2-0 win on Saturday while goals from Katelyne Lesperance, Kassidy Almgren and Jade Hardy, with the first of her career, claimed the 3-0 win and a trip to the finals on Sunday.

Red Rock Rangers
Peewee Hockey
Eastern Zone Champions
in Terrace Bay on Feb. 23-25th!

By Colleen Kjellman

The Red Rock Rangers Peewee Team claimed the Eastern Zone Championship by winning the most exciting game of their season. It looked like it was all over for Red Rock in the final against Geraldton.

Geraldton Goldminers were winning 5-3 with less than 4 minutes in the game and had kept Red Rock from scoring for a period and a half. At 3:17 in the third, Evan Mignault scored to bring Red Rock within one. A minute later Alex Harvey netted one to tie the game. Fans, coaches and players were all on the edge of their seats. Tied at 5-5 with 1:37 to go, Captain Jared Jean scored the winning goal and Red Rock was able to hold Geraldton off for the win. The fans went wild; it truly was a thrilling hockey game to be a part of. Geraldton fans were gracious and applauded the Rangers on their win. Jonathon Krawczuk, Rangers goalie was outstanding all weekend, his first year between the pipes. Wingers Storm Borg and Tyler Anderson contributed with strong fore checking while Caitlyn Harvey and Raymond Pawluk kept the pressure on offensively.

Bailey Chouinard chipped in the first goal of the final game. Defensive line David Jeffrey & Nick Dagenais put forth a tremendous effort. Travis Kjellman & Connor Rendell the other defensive duo worked non-stop keeping the play out of their end.

The Eastern Zone Playdowns were held in Terrace Bay on Feb 23, 24, 25. The other teams competing were Schreiber, Nipigon and Marathon. Geraldton was in 1st place after beating the Rangers in round robin play. Red Rock took the long route with a win over Schreiber in the semi-finals. Congratulations to Geraldton on their silver medal, they played hard all weekend and have a very competitive team. Schreiber took home the bronze. The Eastern Zone Championship ends the season for the Red Rock Peewee team and what a season it was; winning all 6 tournaments they took part in. Awesome passing along with offensive and defensive plays at both ends of the ice provided spectacular entertainment for fans. Coaches Paul Mignault, Gordie Harvey and Jeremy Baker groomed a very disciplined and hard working group. Coach Mignault's motivational talks always seem to spark the team when needed!!!
