MULTIPLY EMPLOYEES, FOOD BANK BENEFIT FROM PROVINCIAL MIXED COMPETITION

The Multiply Employee Benefit Fund and the Nipigon Food Bank were the big winners off the ice during the 2007 Northern Ontario Provincial Mixed Curling Championships which were held at the curling club recently.

A silent auction was held during the event, and a total of $1,500 was made to the benefit of the employee fund. The curling club also donated the rental monies in the amount of $575 from the annual Multiply bonspiel to the employee fund.

All of the admission fees from the mixed curling championships in the amount of $400 were also donated to the Nipigon Food Bank.

On the ice, there was some stiff competition and some great shot making. So much so that before the last draw there was a possibility of a 5 way tie…...again. Congratulations to the Mike Assad rink from Thunder Bay who defeated the Jeff Brown rink of Timmins 7-5 in the finals. The Assad rink will now represent Northern Ontario at the National Championships. Congratulations also go out to Mike McCarville who won the Ford Hot Shots competition which was held during the event.

Nipigon is gaining a reputation for holding great curling competitions. This is backed up by an 89% approval rating of questionnaires that were distributed among the competitors. We appreciate the support of all of the spectators, the help of all of the volunteers involved, and we thank all of our sponsors for your great support.

NIPIGON CURLING CLUB HOSTING PROVINCIAL MIXED CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Nipigon Curling Club is hosting another major curling event from March 15 - 18, 2007.
This year, the Northern Ontario Mixed Champion will be determined between 6 teams in a round robin format. The Northwestern Ontario, Northern Ontario and The Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Associations will each send their best 2 teams to compete to represent Northern Ontario at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships.
Still riding the community's success of last year's KIA Cup, the curling club is striving to make this a great event for the community as well. Sponsors are being sought and planning is moving ahead.
"The curling will take place in the curling club this year, but that is about the only difference from the KIA Cup" explains Sue Lemieux, the event Chair. "There will be an opening ceremony, luncheon and banquet just as there was in last year's competition. We will also require time keepers, officials and drivers."
There will be a Ford Hot Shots competition between the participants on Friday, March 16th. During this event the players compete head to head with 6 different curling shots. It is based on a points system. The preliminary round will go in the morning, and the finals will go in the afternoon.
We will be holding a silent auction throughout the event. ALL proceeds raised will be donated to the Multiply Employees Benefit Fund. As the mill and their recreation committee have been so good to the community in our times of need, we feel it is only fitting that we return the favour in their time of need.
All admission fees collected ($3 / game, $5 / day) will also be donated to either the local food bank, or will be used to help out our Junior Curling Program.
As the annual Nipigon Ladies Bonspiel is scheduled for the following weekend, it may be difficult for visitors to recognize the club room when they attend. Instead, it may look like a pirate ship, or a deserted treasure island for this year's theme of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Anyone interested in helping should contact Sue Lemieux at 887-3171, Loretta Mangoff at 887-0229 or Paul Ertel at 887-3476.
